It’s not a completely crazy question to ask if one wants a complete product versus a product that is 80% complete, yet the rational person might lean towards completed. That being said, how many model ship enthusiasts purchase a ship in a bottle complete? What parent listens to their child who asks for a model car and then gives them one completed and painted?
Is the process not part of the joy?
There is nothing wrong with buying a completed AR, but if you want our advice it will be to build. When in doubt, build your own AR starting with an 80 percent lower and experience the joy of a rifle made specifically for you and by you. Not to mention, building your own AR brings with it certain tactical and legal advantages that you might want to leverage in your favor.
The Legal Advantage of an 80 Lower Receiver
Before we go too far into this, we need to remind you that we are now lawyers. So if there is any question about what we are going to tell you then you should seek out your own legal advice about any applicable laws in your state. That being said, the ATF makes it pretty clear that an 80 Lower Receiver does not constitute a firearm. To them, it is nothing more than an oddly shaped hunk of aluminum. Until one completes the milling process utilizing one of great quality jigs we offer, then you should be safe in just about any state. We say just about any state as we don’t know what the gun grabbers in California are going to come up with tomorrow.
However, as it stands now you can purchase an 80 lower and have it shipped right to the front door and the ATF can’t do anything about it. In fact, because laws are ever changing we actually recommend you by 80 lowers in bulk. There is no need to complete them all right now as you can simply store them away for a day when you might need them most. So ten or maybe 20 years from now, just pull out a jig like the Easy Jig Gen 2 and go to work. In as little as 30 minutes you will have a completed lower receiver ready for a life of pew.
The Tactical Advantages of an 80 Lower Receiver
One of the reasons you will nearly always see us advocate for a build over purchasing a completed firearm is that it imbues you with the knowledge to take your own 2A rights into your own hands. Once this knowledge is in your head, then no gun law can ever take it from you. As of the time of this article, one can even purchase and build their own AR with our California Compliant 80 Lower. However, with proposed legislation this may not always be so. So if you live in California and you have yet to engrain this knowledge in your head the time to act is now.
The other reason we are such strong proponents is that there is a certain tactical advantage to knowing your weapon better than anyone else. When you have built every part of this firearm from scratch, there is a certain sense of ownership that you take with you. As the famed Rifleman’s creed says, there might be many like it but this one is yours. So that’s why 10 times out of ten times we vote to go the route of an 80 lower over a completed lower.
